Special Features of Laboratory Model (Kisan Tel Yantra)
Oil Expeller

In the Laboratory, small quantities of freshly extracted oil from Edible/Non-Edible
seeds are often required for on-the-spot analysis.
This can be obtained at an affordable price from buying our kisan tel yantra model,
which is capable of processing small quantities of oil-seed. A model screw press
(Kisan Tel Yantra) is designed and fabricated as replica of big oil expeller. In the
design of the screw press, the size of the screw material, the optimum shaft length
for a given screw pitch, appropriate shaft speed, the tapering angle of the cone,
the maximum shaft diameter, and the inside diameter of the enclosing chamber cage
bars are determined. A shaft speed of not more than 60-90 RPM is suitable for
working the screw press (Kisan Tel Yantra) while the clearance between the shaft and
the chamber age set is not more than 2.5 mm.

The screw press method is less capital intensive, technically less extensive
compared with the solvent extraction method and less labour-intensive than the
aqueous method. It is also continuous, unlike the hydraulic and the aqueous methods
that are done batch- wise. Also before solvent extraction method is applied, the
oil-seed is pre-pressed, hence these advantages of the screw press over the other
methods make screw pressing popular and inevitable in future oilseed processing. To
increase vegetable-oil production therefore, a good understanding of the
working principles of the screw press is desirable.

In oil recovery by screw pressing, operating at elevated temperature enhances the
oil yield, The heating of the oil seed may be prior to pressing, the optimum
expressing temperature depends on the type of oil-seed, but is generally above 70
Degree The optimum condition is not only to obtain maximum oil yield, but also high
quality products, i.e. oil and cake.

For optimum performance, screw presses are designed for specified usage. In the
laboratory, small quantities of oil are usually required for analysis, hence it is
desirable that a screw press that can efficiently handle small quantities of
oil-seed be provided.

The objectives to design (Kisan Tel Yantra)Lab model expeller are:

(i) To design and fabricate a laboratory model screw press for edible and non-edible
seeds.
(ii) To test the screw press in order to determine its optimum operating conditions.
(iii) To characterize the oil and the by-products.

Design/process of (Screw oil Expeller) Kisan Tel Yantra

The screw press is basically a helical screw mounted on a conical shaft supported by
bearings with the shaft rotating in a stationary chamber cage set. As the shaft
rotates, the screw toward the discharge end of the assembly moves the oil-seed that
is fed through the hopper to the inlet
where it is pressed. The oil expressed is discharged through perforations in the
chamber cage set bottom and the cake is discharged at the unclosed end of the
chamber cage set.

In addition to it is performing the two operations of oil-seed milling and oil
expressing simultaneously, with a small quantity of oil-seed (10 kg/h-15kg/h), and
satisfying the performance requirements, the constructed screw press should be
simple in design and easy to maintain at local village level, and be operated by
anybody, even without any previous technical training.

Design of the screw press

The screw press was designed using basic engineering principles.

Screw press operation

The oil seeds that are to be crushed are put inside the hopper while the
2 kw (3 HP) electric motor continues to rotate the screw shaft at a speed of not
more than 90 RPM, preferably. The rotating power of the motor is transmitted to the
shaft through a pulley and V-belt. As the oil-seed is fed into the machine, the
screw conveyed the seed forward towards the tapering end of the shaft, while the
increasingly small clearance between the tapered screw shaft and the chamber cage
bars milled the seeds. At the throat' the clearance between the shaft and the
chamber cage is so small (about 2.5 mm) that as the milled material (meal) passes
through, oil is pressed out of it. The oil drained out through the slits at the
under side of the chamber cage, and can be collected into a container tank kept
below, while the cake is pushed out at the end of the
chamber cage.

Characterizing cake
Physical examination of the grains of the cake was carried out. A small quantity of
the cake was sun-dried until some of the grains can be isolated. The sizes of the
cake is not more than 2.5 mm.

Our kisan tel yantra was designed and fabricated, and was tested and found capable
of expressing oil from small quantities of the oil-seed. The crude oil obtained was
found to be of high quality.
